Bruker Magnettech ESR 5000
The Bruker Magnettech ESR 5000 table-top spectrometer has been funded within the framework of the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRE) by the State of Mecklenburg West Pomerania. Despite its compact footprint it can compete with full-sized X-band cw spectrometers. The microwave cavity enables the sensitive detection of electron spin resonances at X-band frequencies (9.4 GHz). Since the magnetic field may be swept over the whole relevant magnetic field region, it is well suited for investigating paramagnetic metal ion complexes with significant spin-orbit coupling or zero-field splitting. Also, it is ideal for the characterization of radical species and quantitative spin counting due to a large degree of control over the experimental parameters such as microwave power and field mudulation.
The available equipment allows us to cool the sample down to 100 K with liquid nitrogen, thus besides liquid or powdered samples we can also investigate frozen solutions or short-lived species. A broadband UV-Vis-IR light source can generate photo-excited spin-active centers. Lossy dielectric samples (e.g., liquid aqueous solutions) can be measured in a flat cell, and a motorized goniometer allows the automated characterization of single crystals.
